Five for Friday: Valentine's Day

I've taken some time off Five for Friday, and can't promise I'll be doing it regularly any time soon, partly because I've been busy with my project 365 blog, so I'm neglecting this one. But I've been running across so many fun things, I wanted to share some ideas for Valentine's Day...

1. Handmade. There are some great sites with ideas for handmade valentines...some that you can print on your computer (check out The Long Thread), some you can do with your kids (ivillage has some really cute ones).

2. Local. Our local IQ magazine had an article on the importance of shopping locally for Valentine's presents, especially things like flowers. Less gas to get them here, supporting the local economy, fresher...such a good reminder.

3. Templates. Goodness there are some adorable templates out there you can get for photos. My favorite, of course, are from Beyond Red & Green. There are some cute free ones on the PIF photo blog, and MCP Actions blog. I so wish my oldest would let me do a cute template for his valentines, but the world of marketing has won over another child, and we bought Spiderman valentines for his class!

4. Recycled. Or repurposed I guess would be a better way of putting it. I haven't been able to find anything cute for my daughter to wear for Valentine's Day, so I took one of her onesies and am making something...

it still needs to be stitched (hopefully tonight), and I'd like to make something matching (if I have time, which may not happen)...a headband? easy skirt? I should have photos when it's completed.

5. Personal. My sweet friend Heather, who was killed this summer, shared a wonderful Valentine's Day tradition she does (did - still can't get used to that) for her children. Each year she would write messages for her kids on construction paper hearts, then hang them with ribbon from their door frames so they would be hanging there when they woke up in the morning. At breakfast, she would read them to the younger kids, and the older kids would read their messages. I did this last year for the first time and plan on continuing the tradition.

What are you doing for Valentine's Day?

Ellen great thoughts -- so sorry about your friend. I like that idea and will start that this year with the kids.
