I just bought, and finished in one sitting, Annie Leibovitz's new book. I know people have their opinions on her, but I loved it. In the last chapter, she answers the ten questions she's asked most often. The first one is what advice she has for photographers just starting out. She says, "...the best thing a young photographer can do is stay close to home...Discover what it means to be close to your work, to be intimate with a a subject." Which reinforces my most recent introspections. So here's the next assignment - complete it when you can, and post a link for us to see - photograph something close to home (whatever that means to you)...I thought about doing a photo of my kids, but they're probably sick of having the camera in their face, so I chose another subject - my husband. Walt is truly the backbone of our family. He is a romantic husband, a communication guru (really, our relationship is the flip of the stereotypical non-communicative-man), and a fabulous father. My son worships him. He has amazing amounts of knowledge in everything - I don't know how he retains it all. He reads classics. He cooks pho. He cleans the toilets (I know - can you believe it?). He's truly my partner in life and I appreciate his support, encouragement and viewpoint so much. I can't think of a subject closer to home than him.
Here's Beth's entry...
